G’day all…just one of those posts about what I’ve been doing in life, without any real deep thoughts. Or, maybe I’ll have some deep thoughts afterwards as I type.
Finished is another week of university, with only 11 more until my first calculus midterm sits on the horizon. Only less than one week and 3 days until my IT and Tech Comm. term papers are due. Less than 15 hours until I start doing a list of things I have written down to do. Finished is another week, and what have I learned at university? Not so much from the subjects I am taking, but more about the people around me on campus. On Wednesday, I had dinner at 5pm with Chris Forbes, who is a fellow electrical engineer. We decided to head over to the UB Caf - more specifically, Spices. Now, when people said Chartwell’s is crap, I am almost full-heartedly agreeing with them now. I had ordered a soya sauce fried rice…and I never finished it - the soya was just too salty. Of course, at the time I was kind of suffering the after-effects of standing in the cold for 6 hours…
After dinner that night, I went over to find L214 for the Campus Church kickoff night. To my surprise, I see Tom, who was part of TOC (the Frosh leaders). Now, I’ve heard a lot of smack from my upper year Asian friends about CC…and knowing myself, I wanted to form MY OWN opinion. I think other than the DC 1st year student of water purification, named Keith, shaking my hand and talking to me when I initiated in conversation…nobody else in the room bothered introducing themselves, or engage in conversation. Oh, except Ross Lewis…but he seemed in a hurry to talk to other people. However, I do understand their sense of hostility and their alienation towards me…because I am afterall, a newcomer who’s Asian (ie. not Caucasian or “Black”). Asians, in general, are supposed to be reserved and not that out-going. Hence, they didn’t NEED to engage in conversation with me because my of how people of my colour usually act. I’m not angry, seriously. I plan to further evaluate Campus Church by attending the Connect Groups, just to see how things will go. However, they haven’t replied to my email yet about them…so we’ll have to wait.
Yesterday was another day of learning more about new friends (ie. Edwin and Daryl) while standing for almost a full hour in a bus filled with other university/college students. Good times, good times. Today wasn’t as bad as yesterday though…since I got a seat. Edwin, on the other hand, had to stand for a little while…but eventually got a seat. Happy were we.
I guess this leads to WHY/HOW I was able to get a seat then…let me elaborate! I had a linear algebra tutorial from 2:10 to 4…meaning I would have had 7mins to run across campus, from behind the library, to the bus loop. Our TA looked at his watch at around 3:05 and said “SHIT! IM GOING TO MISS MY BUS! DAMMIT!!!!!” He told us he’d see us again, quickly packed his stuff and ran out the door. Now, since we were out early…and I had around 3 mins to run to the bus stop..I ran. I didn’t run fast…at all. So, I missed the bus, just as it left…and sure enough, it was packed. Being defeated, I sat at the bench right beside the bus stop, took out the laptop and started up MSN. The rest of the story is basically told.
Czech beers are interesting; we had it today (beer can be expired for up to a few weeks before going bad) with dinner. Of course, I followed my “eat first, drink in between and later” routine…but I didn’t finish the glass and I felt tipsy - bad sign (NOTE: My definition of tipsy is: if I drink more I may get drunk. NOT: I can’t even walk straight). If you feel tipsy (my definition), just don’t finish the drink…that’s how most kids my age (or any age for that matter) get drunk, if you think about it… And most definitely, don’t be an idiot and drink when you’re sad…you just KNOW you’re going to overdo it. Anyway, back to the Czech beer named Kozel! It has a nice strong, bold taste…much contrasted to Heineken and others so far’s lighter tastes - surprised me, that’s for sure. Now, Kozel is 4.8%, which is lower than Heineken, Asahi and Sapporo’s 5+…so it doesn’t make too much sense that less than one full glass of Kozel would make me tipsy, as opposed to 1.5 glasses of the others.
Possible reasons:
- Different ingredients
- It’s Czech
- I am going through early stages of a cold
Well…I guess that’s it for this week. Maybe another update soon - who knows? We’ve got two more beers in the fridge, the UK one and the German one. So that means you’ll be expecting another beer review in at least two weeks.
Cheers, and remember…drink, but don’t get drunk - that’s stupid.
