An Explanation of “Chris’ Pen Is”

So I’ve been getting a lot of positive comments regarding the latest comic, ranging from “It looks much cleaner” to “I can finally understand what’s going on because you added dialog!”. From this, I thought I’d go and give you a visual explanation of the entire process, which is long and tedious.

Read the entire process after the jump!

Step One: The Drawing

So yeah…sketched everything in a raster program…in Paint. Could probably be passed as OEKAKI!

Step Two: The Line Art

The next step was to do the vectorized line art. I chose to use Inkscape, which is an open-source alternative to Adobe Illustrator. Of course, you all have several hundred dollars to go and BUY Illustrator, right?

Step Three: The Final Product

And finally, 1hour 10mins later with the sketch layer deleted and everything else finished up, the comic is done!

EDIT/NOTE: Found out afterwards that my step 2 and 1 are actually closely related. The correct order of steps is actually:

  1. Sketch in paint/paper
  2. Line-art in Inkscape
  3. Add colours and such
  4. Delete the sketch layer
  5. Add dialog
  6. Upload and write explanation post
