I haven’t touched my DS in a long time (perhaps on-and-off for around a year), and some of the games I had started before my lengthly hiatus I had forgotten about. So when I anticipated an epic wait at the doctor’s office inside the car, while my mom got a haircut WHILE waiting for the doctor, I was sure to bring along the handheld enamel cutey. Of course, that’s how you get hooked again!
There are few console/hand-held games I have finished (ie. lengthly RPG’s or incredibly in-depth simulation games, or economic games), but the ones that I have…I believe its a good sign (ie. Metal Gear Solid, Fable). Half of the reason is because I get bored, frustrated and ultimately distracted. The other half, is exactly the same as the first half…I ran out of story to tell.
Nonetheless, Hotel Dusk was one of those games that had a story to suck me in. An NYPD ex-cop named Kyle Hyde is on the search for his ex-partner Bradley, and ends up working as a travelling salesman for a company called Red Crown. Hyde ends up staying at Hotel Dusk, where there are several other shady characters there and the whole mystery begins to unravel as you interact with them, solve puzzles and dive further into the mess of things. Seriously though, if you wanted to know what the game was about, you’re better off referring to gaming sites.
Other things that strung me along was the character design, which really gives a hand-drawn feel, as well as the music most of the time. However, like most adventure games, I was doomed to often spend over 10 minutes trying to figure out where to go and what to do! The puzzles themselves though, are not that difficult, and some even make use of the DS’s microphone and clamshell design (getting one screen onto another). This game requires you to hold the DS like a book, and like a book…there’s plenty of reading at times (much to my dismal when the red light switched on, indicating low battery).
I wasn’t a mystery or adventure fan before this game, but picking it up should definitely cause you to hold on to the DS until you need to recharge, or until you finish.
Check. This. Out.
