A Year In Oshawa

Remember, remember, the Fifth of November…gun powder, treason and plot.

That was the quote I used when I was packing up and getting ready to move into Oshawa last year, and yet I completely forgot about it until I was reminded last night while cleaning up after dinner last night.

Since moving in, there have been plenty of new experiences and refining of existing ones. Click on to continue.

  • I’ve had numerous opportunities to better refine my hosting capabilities (I think the word is hospitality?), and yet there will always be more chances to make it better.
  • Hunting for game deals is a daily task now…even if I don’t have time to play
  • I’ve recently gone to the next step and gotten an audio interface to record with, although I am beginning to think I need to invest in better mics too
  • My campus life is a bit better, since I can actually be around to do things! I’m able to attend class, stay on campus until needed and can even balance an on-campus job.

There are plenty other things that I could mention (especially how 2009 has treated me, what has changed in my life, etc.), but that will probably have to wait for the end-of-2009 post.

However, even though I’ve been in the Dirty ‘Shwa away from the Dutty Scarbz, there’s still so many things I still have yet to experience here! For instance, there’s a bowling alley with indoor go-karts close-by (Neb’s, at Taunton/Wilson)! I found out about it while in Connect Group this year. I also have yet to check out some of the more scenic areas, such as the Harbour/Port, or even the iconic General Motors factory (and less iconic, GM Centre). And of course, I want to see how dirty downtown Oshawa really is…

When I moved here, the land beside me was completely barren and full of weeds…since nobody had bought the lots yet. Since then, the developers have bulldozed the land during the summer, had massive price decreases and are even building beside us now. A week or so ago they began a lot one “house” away from us, which almost has all the framework complete. Today, they began excavating the land in between us (ie. immediately beside). There have also been a lot of other lots springing up around the development. Windfield Farms was also bustling with horses…but a couple days ago they announced they’d be closing down due to the 407 Expansion, housing developments here, and the subsequent construction that will happen. I shot a few time-lapse sunrise/sunset videos a while ago…and never had the time to put them up. Within the next 5-10 years those serene scenes will just be a memory never to be seen again, since the farms will be built-over by the University and other developments.

Here’s to more good times with friends, family and loved ones! Now if only I could get off my ass and upload those videos…
